The Shanghai Jade Buddha Temple (Ā ā€ŒäøŠęµ·ēŽ‰ä½›åÆŗā€Œ – Jade Buddha) was founded in 1882 by the monk Hui Gen (ę…§ę ¹ę³•åøˆ). After his journey to Burma and the return of five jade Buddha statues, he enshrined some of them in Shanghai, eventually becoming the Jade Buddha Temple we know today. Although the temple has been destroyed by fire and relocated several times, it was rebuilt on An Yuan Road in 1918 and remains to this day. This important Zen Buddhist temple is considered one of Shanghai's ten tourist landmarks.

Highlights within the temple.

  • The Temple of the Four Heavenly Kings (天ēŽ‹ę®æ) enshrines Maitreya Bodhisattva, the Bodhisattva of Veda, and the Four Great Guardian Kings.

  • The main hall of the temple (大雄宝ę®æ) houses statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Bhaisajyaguru Buddha, along with large-scale murals.

  • The Jade Buddha Hall (ēŽ‰ä½›ę„¼) – features a seated jade Buddha statue, 1.95 meters tall, adorned with jewels.

  • The Reclining Buddha Hall (卧佛堂) – Inside is a jade Buddha statue in the reclining posture.šŸ“šŸ“
